Bronze

Sculptors in West Africa have been known to make bronze sculptures using the ‘lost wax’ casting technique since the tenth century. The process requires a great deal of skill and knowledge in using numerous materials. Artists create sculptures from wax, which they then pack clay around before firing. After firing, the clay turns into hard ceramic with the shape and detail of the original sculpture, and the wax melts away to leave a cavity into which molten bronze is poured. After the molten bronze cools, the ceramic is cracked away to reveal a sculpture which will need considerable work to finish into the final product. The artists at Tigoung Nonma use this process to create sculptures which relate to contemporary life in Burkina Faso.
