Pottery

The procedure for making pots varies within the different communities in Africa. Here in Burkina Faso and within the Tigoung Nonma cooperative, the traditional method of a potter’s wheel, where the ball of clay is placed on the centre of the turn table, is the most commonly used procedure. The table rotates using foot power, and the desired shape is moulded by the artisan. Once finished, the pots are fired in the kiln. It takes two artisans to make pottery items, due to the difficulty of operating the machinery with a physical disability. All the pottery is of an original design, ranging from cups and saucers to elaborate vases and clay sculptures.
